The Search Committee and The Leadership Team, unanimously recommends COURTNEY GRAGER as the candidate for our Associate Pastor of Connection Ministries.

Please join us Sunday, March 31st after church for lunch as we get to know Courtney, her story, and her heart for our church and the ministry she will lead.  There will be time for questions and answers followed by a congregational meeting where we will vote on her call.

As a search committee, we were asked to find a candidate who deeply loves Jesus and is clearly called by God to serve the church.  We were also asked to search for someone who would be a unique and diverse voice on our pastoral team, who would bring complementary gifts and competencies to help us fulfill our mission of engaging the spiritually hungry toward a life in Christ by helping people to take the next step, wherever they find themselves.

We searched for over a year, and discovered Courtney who is a jewel in every way.

Courtney is passionate about building the body of Christ, and exhilarated by the special opportunities and challenges that exist in Marin. She describes herself as “beloved” by Christ and is eager to see others experience that love, too. She has imaginatively connected, mentored, and discipled others in the churches she has served, and they have cherished her. She brings tremendous gifts as a pastor, leader, strategist, listener, mentor, teacher, and lover of people.

We think her education, experience, gifts and passion will encourage and equip the spiritually hungry at Marin Covenant on their journey to be more like Jesus as they deepen their love and connection to each other.  We long to see our church become the beautiful healthy community of Christ we were meant to be, enabling us all to experience the abundant life Christ promised and offering hope and good news to Marin. We think Courtney is the right person to help us.

Courtney is a California girl at heart. She hails from the southern part of the state and spent the better part of her years in the East Bay in Danville. It was there she developed her love for worship leading and, out of that, began her theological studies with Fuller Seminary. Earning her Masters of Divinity and later her Doctorate, Courtney gravitated toward questions of spiritual formation and investment in developing creative spiritual practices. As she experienced God’s strong and gentle healing of her own soul, she embraced God’s spectacular repurposing of her challenges for growth and freedom. Courtney has used these skills in the contexts of San Ramon Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, and most recently University Presbyterian Church in Seattle in roles related to congregational care, connections, hospitality, discipleship, small groups, and worship. Additionally, she founded a nonprofit, Deep Well Ministries, which gathers women to rest, renew, and reconnect with themselves and the Lord in a setting of beauty, hospitality, and intentionality.

Courtney believes that beauty matters and it is a privilege to live in an area of the world where stepping outside is so easily a reminder of God’s love. She is a Pure Barre addict, loves a good hike, and has recently braved the frontier of cross-country skiing and cycling (surprising even herself!). One of her favorite roles in life is being parent to her two adult daughters, Camille (24) and Emma (26), who call her Rev. Doc. Mom. Camille and Emma and her husband Jackson all live in Nashville and have learned the hard way that teenage silliness can haunt you as a sermon illustration years later if you’re not careful.

Inviting others to behold the beauty and grace of God’s love, to belong to a community in which they can continually be stretched by the Spirit, and to become transformed by the renewing of their mind and actions daily, fits God’s call on Courtney’s life. While she enjoys preaching, her greatest strengths are as a teacher, developer, and mentor. Her deepest joy in ministry is watching as people are freed up from old patterns and equipped to live walking in sync with the Spirit in their everyday lives.
