Use whatever gifts God has given you to serve others

This week's devotional is from Pastor Ben Kerns.

Encounter:  Read 1 Peter 4:10-11

I could not be more excited about this new series.  For the next few weeks, we are going to be leaning into our true calling, taking on the mantle of Jesus, and figuring out how to be good news to a world that is in desperate need of it!

The basic idea is simple; Jesus came to bring good news.  And we, by being followers of Jesus, by being adopted into the family of God, part of the body of Christ, a masterpiece created for good works, it is time to live more fully into our calling!

As followers of Jesus, we don't simply use our time, efforts, and resources to deepen our faith and intimacy with Jesus.  That spiritual work is done so we are fully equipped to do the incredible things that God has called us to do!  To be good news!

I love this passage in 1 Peter because the assumption is that you have been given gifts, and those gifts are to be leveraged to serve others.

But the way Paul wrote it, these aren't just high and noble gifts.  Whatever gifts you have been given!  Each and every one of us has been given gifts, passions, spheres of influence.  They all range in size but not of importance.  The emphasis is never on increasing your sphere, but to simply leverage it!

Like in the movie Dunkirk, each of us has a boat.  Some can hold 5, other 20, other 100.  As maturing followers of Jesus, our eyes are not full of envy because our boat is not as big or as influential as those around us.  Rather, our eyes are firmly fixed on Jesus and using whatever gifts God has given us to love and serve others!

To whom are you called?

What gifts do you possess, physically and spiritually to bring good news?

What work needs to happen so you can truly be good news to a world that needs it?

May God truly be gracious to us we lean into the spiritual work of discerning our unique gifts and abilities, our hard work of developing and maximizing them for Jesus, and our faithfulness and generosity to pour them out as a drink offering with full abandon!  So that you and me, along with all of our sisters and brothers may truly be good news to a world that is in desperate need of it!
